Jamaica will soon be opening cannabis ‘ATMs’ in airports in hopes to bring in revenue from tourists.
The kiosks would allow tourists to access weed as soon as they enter the country. The drug was legalized in the country in February and the kiosks would allow for more cash flow.
It is legal to carry up to two ounces of weed in Jamaica, but it does require a license. The Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) is already looking into ways for visitors to get a license for the drug. Although it is legal, police can still issue tickets for possession and a fine for about a four dollars.
CLA member Delano Seiveright hopes the country can thrive off the legal sale of cannabis. If Jamaica follows in the footsteps of Canada and US state Colorado, it could lead to millions. Colorado has sold over a billion dollars worth of marijuana and collected 135 million dollars in taxes. In Canada, the medical marijuana market brings in 100 million dollars for the country.
The kiosks would be monitored by people with medical training and will be able to give permits or licenses to tourists who would be allowed to carry up to two ounces of cannabis during their trip in Jamaica.
