Workers at three Detroit casinos have voted in favor of authorizing a strike, if necessary, according to the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The Detroit Casino Council (DCC), which represents workers at the MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood at Greektown, and MotorCity casinos, announced that workers voted 99% “yes” to authorize a strike at all three locations if a new contract agreement is not reached. The DCC stated that strikes could be called as early as mid-October when contracts expire. The Detroit Casino Council consists of five unions representing casino employees, including UNITE HERE Local 24, UAW, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.
This announcement comes as labor unions seize the opportunity presented by low unemployment to advocate for higher pay and improved working conditions in their negotiations for new labor agreements. Meanwhile, approximately 18,300 UAW members employed by the Detroit Three automakers (Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis) are already on strike. As a result, one assembly plant at each of the three carmakers and 38 parts distribution centers at GM and Stellantis have been shut down.
