Los Angeles 2028 decision on new sports in next few weeks-IFAF

A decision regarding the inclusion of new sports in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is expected to be made in the next few weeks, according to the President of the International Federation of American Football. Flag football, a non-contact version of American football played by teams of five, is one of nine sports vying for a spot in the 2028 Games. The final decision will be ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during their meeting in Mumbai in October. IFAF President Pierre Trochet stated that they anticipate a decision from LA2028 organizers in the coming weeks. However, flag football faces tough competition, particularly from cricket, which is considered a favorite due to its global reach, financial strength, and broadcast appeal. The shortlisted sports for inclusion in the 2028 Games also include baseball-softball, lacrosse, breakdancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsport. Flag football is relying on its popularity in the United States, its growing international following, and the potential participation of NFL players to secure a place in Los Angeles. Brett Gosper, head of NFL Europe, expressed excitement about the possibility of NFL superstars competing in the Olympics. While these sports will only be included in one edition of the Games, they hope that their Olympic participation will boost their growth and make them more appealing for future cycles. The LA 2028 organizers have the authority to decide on several sports to be included. In contrast, the Paris 2024 Olympics organizers have already included four additional sports for their Games: breakdancing, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing, three of which were also featured as additional events at the Tokyo Games.
