With the rise of Globalism, we are also witnessing the rise of Xenophobic attitudes. The attack on a Mosque in New Zealand is a clear example of How the Xenophobia can endanger the peace of the world. More than 50 people were killed in that brutal attack. A Xenophobic world can obsolete all the progress which this world has achieved.
In the first week of June, Aung San Suu Kyi, state counselor of Myanmar visited Hungary. She held important meetings in Hungary. She also met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Both countries mentioned that they are facing problems of migration. Both the leaders also emphasized on coexistence in the respective regions.
Unfortunately both the leaders termed the growing Muslim population as a problem. But the facts do not support their claim. In Hungary, the Muslim population is only about 5000. And also the Muslim population is not a big issue for Myanmar. In recent years Myanmar has expelled thousands of Rohingya Muslims from the Rakhine state. Many of them are residing in refugee camps in Bangladesh and many are roaming in oceans as no country is willing to accept them. A United Nation report called Rohangiya as the most persecuted community on the planet.
Despite these proven facts and figures, both the leaders claim that the growing Muslim population is a threat to their countries. Suu Ki is regarded as a human rights activist in the west. However, her blind support to the Myanmar military has darkened her image. In a military crackdown of 2016, about 600,000 people migrated from Rakhine to neighboring Bangladesh. And thousands of people are either missing or dead. About 100,000 are living in camps inside Myanmar but international visitors are not allowed to visit these camps.
In 2017, the Buddhist supreme leader Dalai Lama has also shown concerns on brutalities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. As the crisis in Myanmar is going on the same situation is being faced by Syria. However, the world is not looking towards the root cause of this problem. However, this refugee problem is not just limited to Myanmar and Hungary. In 2015, European countries signed a deal with Turkey. According to this deal, Turkey is hosting about 3 million Syrian refugees. And Turkey is doing this all with its expenditures.
In 8 years, thousands of Syrians have been killed while thousands are displaced internally. Also, thousands are forced to live in the oceans because no ‘civilized’ country wants to accept them. It seems that Europe’s only preference is how to deal with migrants.
The real problem of Myanmar and Hungary is not the migrants. The issue of migrants is being used as a tool to divert the attention of masses from economic and other issues. Far right politicians use the refugee issue as a tool to placate their voters. Liberal and conservative mindsets are divided on every issue. However, collusion is clearly visible in this case. Both are directly and indirectly opposing the acceptance of refugees.
European and other western nations must realize that Islamophobia and anti-migrant policies will not help in the long term. The Xenophobic policies may put some positive effects in the short term but in the long run, it will just fuel the chaos. Survival of ethnic and religious minorities will become difficult in this Xenophobic world. In the 19th century, Europe was reluctant in accepting Jews and now it is not accepting Muslims.
It may be noted that the problem is not just confined to Muslims. There are many nonmuslim ethnic minorities who are facing persecution. So it is not Islamophobia but Xenophobia. The civilized world is reluctant in absorbing migrants. This Xenophobic attitude is making the world a dangerous place to live. Many people are homeless and are forced to live in the oceans without any hope. Only sensible attitude can stop the civilized world from turning into a Xenophobic world.
