As the world becomes more and more socially aware, people are taking issues like rape and sexual assault more seriously. The case involving Brock Turner and the sexual assault of a young woman attending his university grabbed national attention. But it seems the outcome of this case is in the limelight once again. CNN news is reporting that Turner is set to be released relatively soon after serving only three months of his jail sentence.
Turner was a student at Stanford University. He was tried and convicted of raping a fellow student. The judge sentenced him to six months in jail as his punishment. Much controversy surrounded the case, and while some were satisfied with the penalty, others were not. Some felt that Brock Turner should have been given a harsher sentence, while others felt jail time was too extreme for such a young man.
CNN is also reporting that Turner will return to his families home after being released. He will also have to register as a sex offender after leaving prison.
At the beginning of the trial, the judge of the case was urged to give Turner only probation because he is so young. But after seeing his lack of remorse in the courtroom, the judge’s opinion was changed. Adding this to the letter the victim wrote to express her trauma and sadness from the incident, the judge felt it was necessary to sentence the young man to jail time. This trial has also caused Stanford to reevaluate some of its policies on alcohol use on the campus and at parties.
Sexual assault and rape continue to be issues for young men and women everywhere. College parties and environments with a lot of alcohol are places that these attacks happen. As Turner and his actions grab more attention, hopefully he can be used as an example for punishment and repercussions for such despicable actions.
