There’s nothing quite like sailing. It’s about the freedom of the open seas, the salty air in your face and azure blue waters below your boat, gently swaying while you are sipping cocktails on the deck. It’s about the ability to hoist anchor and move to another exotic locale, guided by the wind in your sails.
No wonder that so many people adore sailing. It is, after all, one of mankind’s oldest professions. Though today we tend to sail more for the sheer pleasure of it, to be one with the element that covers the majority of our beautiful blue planet.
There are many places to sail to, but here are some of our suggestions.
Croatia
A country steeped in European history, Croatia is full of Mediterranean harbor towns of all sizes, from the old to the modern. With more than a 1000 islands to explore, you will definitely find a safe port to your liking.
Of special note is the city of Dubrovnik, where much of the fictional King’s Landing from Game of Thrones was filmed. It is a very popular tourist destination, with several GoT-inspired tours you can take part in.
If you are not a big fan of the TV show, you can still enjoy the delicious food, drinks, bars, and other historical landmarks that Croatia is famous for.
Mexico
Mexico has perfect weather for sailing for most of the year, and it’s no surprise that it’s such an enduring country to visit by boat. Whether you like to take it easy and relax, go to a deserted island where you can bask in the sun and take a refreshing swim, or if you want to enjoy off the walls beach parties, Mexico has got you covered.
Mexico also offers awesome opportunities for diving enthusiasts, with plenty of sea life to observe and even take underwater pictures.
French Polynesia
A group of islands that span several thousand square miles, French Polynesia is best-known for Tahiti, its largest island. The unique black sand beaches, numerous lagoons, and mesmerizing waterfalls will leave you breathless, while the laid-back locals will make you feel welcome and at ease.
Australia
Home to the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is the ideal place if you are serious about scuba diving. Animal and plant life you will not see anywhere else, crystal-clear waters, and incomparable waves that dare you to surf them, are just one of the reasons you should consider sailing there.
Australians are one of the friendliest people you will ever meet, famous for their hospitality, love of beer, and good-natured humor. They are just as likely to take you up for a surfing challenge, as they are for showing you their favorite pubs and introducing you to their favorite sandwich spread – Vegemite.
