It’s no surprise to anyone when a person’s significant other invests money in something they love. That was the case for South Korean actress Kim Ga-yeon.
Kim is married to former Starcraft professional player Lim Yo-hwan (a.k.a. BoxeR). In a recent interview on the South Korean TV show Videostar, Kim talked about the money she put into her husband’s eSports team SlayerS, which she used to own at one point.
According to her, she put 500 million Korean won, or $447,000 USD, bought her husband a house, bought the team a place to practice and even bought ALL of the computers, monitors and other equipment the team needed.
“I’ve bought all of the computer equipment for Yo-hwan before our marriage,” she said. “One training facility and one house. It cost me around 500 million won. It was because they needed a place to practice. It wasn’t an investment, but rather, the best I could do for a person that I love.”
BoxeR had some major health concerns in 2012, when he announced that due to his elbow hurting for over a year and a half, he would be taking a break to rehabilitate. Things only got worse in September of 2013 when he announced that left his game positions due to health complications and effectively retired from the eSports scene.
In 2014 he announced that he would now become a professional poker player.
Investing in your husband’s eSports team even though he is retired and the team had a VERY HIGH chance of failure, seems to me (and I’m sure most other people) like a very silly thing to do; especially out of love.
Despite having disbanded in November of 2012, the team had some very respectable achievements in the world of Starcraft. SlayerS took 3 of the top 4 spots at MLG Anaheim and even became the first team to surpass oGs in terms of number of players in Code S in GSL October.
