Who could forget last season’s fiasco with the Mets trying to acquire Carlos Gomez? Well, they actually did acquire, pending physical. And it turned out that the Mets didn’t like what they saw in Carlos Gomez’s physical and nixed the deal. The trade would have sent Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores to the Brewers and Gomez to the Mets. Hearing this led to Flores crying on the field because Mets GM Sandy Alderson never told manager Terry Collins to take him out of the game, because the trade wasn’t official.
Now, a little over a year later, the Mets once again have the opportunity to acquire Carlos Gomez. Gomez wasn’t designated for assignment by the Astros. And reports say the two teams interested in trading for him are the Cardinals and the Mets. It might seem weird to some, but the Mets should acquire him. And this time for real. So far this season for the Astros, Gomez was hitting .210 with five home runs and 29 RBIs.
Gomez isn’t exactly playing great, but he could still help the Mets. With Juan Lagares on the DL and no timetable for a return, the Mets currently have no right handed outfielders. They also don’t have anyone who can really play a good center field. Those are both things that Gomez brings to the table. At first thought, you could acquire Gomez and get rid of Alejandro De Aza, who, while is playing better lately, has struggled majority of the season. But now before the game on Friday the Mets once again sent Michael Conforto down to the minors. With Conforto going down, it seems to open a whole in the outfield with the Mets now only having 4 active outfielders. So now, a year after it almost happened, could be the perfect time to get Carlos Gomez.
