Michael Douglas sorrowfully reports that his son experienced anti-Semitism while he was visiting Europe. Douglas decided that his son’s story needed to be told, and he went to the Los Angeles Times to express his grievances for his son, while his family was traveling last summer.
In the Op-Ed for the Times, Douglas wrote, “Last summer our family went to Southern Europe on holiday. During our stay at a hotel, our son Dylan went to the swimming pool. A short time later he came running back to the room, upset. A man at the pool had started hurling insults at him.”

Douglas was taken back by these actions, and initially asked his son, “Were you misbehaving?” but his son replied by saying no, while his tears ran down his face.
Douglas then explained to the paper that his son was wearing a Star of David while swimming at the pool. Douglas then told his son, “Dylan, you just had your first taste of anti-Semitism.”
His son became very connected to his father’s religion Judaism around the time of his bar Mitzvah, and although his son’s mother is not Jewish Douglas writes, “While some Jews believe that not having a Jewish mother makes me not Jewish, I have learned the hard way that those who hate do not make such fine distinctions.”
Douglas believes that anti-Semitism has gone dormant for several years, but it has emerged out of the woodwork, and Douglas has experienced it first hand with the abuse of his son.
