Possible Sea Monster Found in Google Earth

It’s the Loch Ness monster all over again. Except instead of a prehistoric creature in a lake, it’s a mythological sea monster in the South Atlantic; and instead of a lucky photographer on a crisp April morning, it’s a Digital Globe satellite.

A Youtube video published June 17 showed how to find the strange satellite image on Google earth. Eight miles Southwest of Deception Island, which is near Antarctica, there is a dark patch of ocean. In that dark patch of ocean is a small white dot. Zoom in closer and you see what appears at first glance to be a huge disturbance in the ocean’s surface about 300 yards long, and a fin or some sort of creature, 60 yards long, breaching the water.

Is it really a sea monster? Or could it just be a whale slapping the ocean surface with its tail, which is altogether not an uncommon occurrence in that part of the sea? Perhaps it isn’t a living creature at all, it could be a rock formation obscured by the darkness and made to look like something more sinister or interesting than it really is.

Two things are for sure: Internet theorists, skeptics, and enthusiasts will probably study and discuss the satellite imagery for the next few months if not longer, and Google Earth will most likely see a spike in usage as more people intrigued by the mysterious pictures try to confirm it’s not a hoax or maybe find a sea monster of their own hidden somewhere in the geo-data.

A similar Google Earth sighting of what many suspected to be a sea monster happened in 2014. It was in a small Australian Gulf; the satellite image showed a long thin shape snaking through the water leaving soft wake-less ripples along the water. It’s snake-like body was compared to the Loch Ness monster at the time.
Deception Island is home to one of Antarctica’s safest harbors and is frequently visited by scientists and tourists. The island’s doughnut shape is the result of a volcanic eruption. In 1963 and 1964 volcanic eruptions demolished the U.S. and Chilean research facilities that were there.
