“I’m a gay man who came out when I was 10 years old, and there’s nothing in my life that I’m prouder of,” the “Stay With Me” singer said.
Sam Smith has never been secretive about his sexuality and has on several occasions spoken out on being gay in the music industry. Smith has acknowledged that he wants to be a spokesman of the gay community by creating knowledge and acceptance towards homosexuals around the globe.
Smith was featured on the cover of NME and discussed the new Bond theme “Writing’s On The Wall” as well as his rise to fame and the melancholy side of his personality.
“I want to be a spokesperson,” Smith said. “I want to be a figure in the gay community, who speaks for gay men. I sell records in countries where gay men get killed and that’s a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realize it’s by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion.”
You can’t but admire his hopes and positivism toward the goal of reaching equality and acceptance in the world of gay people. Whenever celebrities use their status to do good it can only appeal to a warmth inside oneself.
